Magical Colour Changing

It's National Science Week in Australia and we are doing different experiments all week. The fawns love anything that colour changes so this magical experiment brought a lot of smiles! 

Materials
-Half a red cabbage
- Glass jars, milk bottles or cups (your choice really, anything you can see through)
- Stirring stick
- Bi carb soda
- Vinegar
- Lemon juice
- Cream of tartar
- Water
- Dish washing liquid
- Pen and paper (for labels)

Procedure
- Boil cabbage (chopped) in a small-medium saucepan with water covering it until most of the colour has been extracted from the cabbage. Strain and move liquid to a large bowl or jar to cool. I kept ours sealed in a jar until we were ready to use it the next day.

- Pour some of the purple water into a glass of your choice and try adding different ingredients and combinations to see the chemical reactions between the alkalising and acidic ingredients. (Colour combinations listed at the bottom) If your purple water is too dark, you can add some more plain water to lighten it, the colour will still change.

-After each lot, pour it into a separate glass and keep a label of which ingredients created the result. Rinse and repeat each time with your mixing glass. Once you are done you can compare your colour change results.


-Once you are done, it's time for some potion fun! You can use a small amount of the left over purple cabbage water in a glass, add some vinegar, a small amount of dish washing liquid and give it a stir. Next add some bi carb soda and watch the colour changing potions fizz up and out of the glass!



Colours will vary on how much of each ingredient is added.
Teal - Bi carb soda
Blue - Lemon juice and vinegar
Purple (changes and returns to its original colour) - Lemon juice THEN cream of tartar
Magenta - Lemon juice and bi carb soda
Pink (with slight purple) - Lemon juice, vinegar and cream of tartar
Sunset pink (more peachy tone) - Lemon juice

This experiment is a lot of fun, showing children how to extract natural colouring from a vegetable, the red cabbage's ability to act as a pH indicator and learning about alkalising and acidic ingredients.

Regularly we will go on family labyrinth walks because (gratefully) there is a beautiful stone labyrinth in a nearby town that we often visit. Flying bird papercraft

This bird papercraft is so easy to make and you can adjust it to make particular birds or let your imagination run wild to create your own unique bird.  What would need -Cardboard -Paper -String -Glue -Desired medium to decorate with -Small hole punch (or something pointy to create a hole - I used one of my craft tools) How to make it First draw out a bird body on the cardboard. It doesn’t need to be perfect, the only part you want to rule straight is the back so the wings sit right on it when attached. Optional to you but I cut out tails separately and glued them on before decoration so the bird body was the same for them all. Once you’re happy with your bird body, cut it out and trace it on the cardboard for multiple birds. I added a crest onto the cockatoo one before cutting it out. DIY Willow bird nest

This DIY bird nest is great for Spring lessons, play or seasonal displays. The fawns do love birds and I thought a fantastic activity would be an invitation for them to create their very own nests with a range of provided materials. As I've been inspired by nature crafts lately involving willow and weaving, I thought I would create a nest for them that we can use whenever we learn about birds, spring etc. This is my first time crafting with willow and I'm pretty happy with it. 😊 For their invitation to build a nest it will serve as an example prop.  Getting started, of course you will need some willow branches. How many will depend on the size of the nest you wish to create. Start with a handful. You can keep some of the leaves attached if you wish, I kept a few of the smallest ones on here and through out my nest.
